A new chapter

It’s been over two years since I’ve posted a blog! I can’t believe time has just gone by like that. Do you all still remember me? 😉

I hope everyone is doing well! Last year has been one hell of a ride, both extremely good and extremely bad. I worked full time and I travelled a lot for personal reasons, which ended up resulting to a full (creative) burnout. This year I’m trying to focus on myself, my overall wellbeing, on the things I love doing and on my closest friends and family. Hopefully, 2019 will be a whole new chapter for me.

And with this new chapter: some new plushies and new streams! I’m keeping my fingers crossed but I expect streams to be back during the second half of this year. I can’t wait to get back to streaming!

In the meantime I’m trying to get back into the groove of things. When you haven’t crafted in a long time, it’s hard to start again. It took me a long time to feel inspired again, but it finally happened yesterday! I’ve been so excited for Good Omens, I just had to make plushies of Crowley and Aziraphale. (and I imagine, once the show airs, I’ll make more characters)

Crowley (L) and Aziraphale (R) from the show ‘Good Omens’

Hopefully I can give my blog a new look soon! I’m planning to make 1 or 2 blog posts a month. What type of blogs would you like to see? And what kind of plushies would you like to see made? Feel free to comment below!

Hope to see you all again soon!

Symmetra reporting

I’ve been meaning to write this blog since the beginning of this year. It’s been sitting in my drafts for ages but I finally got around publishing it!

As you all know I’ve started working on my Overwatch plush project. It’s a project I’ve been putting lots of time, love and effort into. Whenever I finish an Overwatch plush I tend to tag either the official Overwatch twitter and/or some of the writers. I never expect any replies but when I do get them it’s great! It’s good to know that fanartists are appreciated by the original creators!

What I did not expect was Anjali Bhimani (the voice actress of Symmetra) to find my plushies and retweet them! Especially in something she wasn’t tagged in. It rarely ever happens that (voice) actors like/retweet things at their own accord without being tagged in them.

I offered to make her some Symmetra plushies. She kindly provided me the address of her PO box and continued to chat over DM’s. Overall it was a lovely experience and I hoped she’d like the work I had created. What I did not expect was her making an entire unboxing video!

(You can find the original video on twitter here)

Anjali has been extremely supportive of my work as well as the work of other fanartists on several platforms. It’s such a motivation to keep working and creating art for me. There are so many people/official accounts out there who take their fans for granted and don’t take the time to interact over social media. I do get why some of them can’t, but it’s just so refreshing to see an entire team of people care about the community. Anjali strikes me as a kind and caring person. I do hope I’ll get to meet her in person someday and thank her for her kindness and support.

Make sure to check out Anjali’s youtube channel: sweeetanj – her ‘I am fun sized’ series is extremely inspiring!!

Happy H4nnivers4ry! + Updates

I wanted to wish my fellow Fannibals a Happy H4nnivers4ry today! As many of you know, Hannibal has been a great inspiration for me and it really means a lot to me! I’ve definitely had some amazing opportunities and met awesome friends thanks to this series! I went into detail about it in my last post for those who haven’t read it!

As for updates; I almost have enough money to buy myself a new pc! Which means I’ll be back streaming regularly sometime in April/May. I’m so excited to start streaming again – I really missed hanging out with you guys on stream!

Nakama forever,

Letter to Bryan Fuller

When I was at Red Dragon Con this weekend I realised many fannibals had given you handwritten letters. It had somehow never occurred to me to write you a letter, but here I am writing one in blog form. I was absolutely overjoyed to meet you after following you online since S1 of Hannibal. It was only after I got home that it struck me how much meeting you had actually meant to me.

When Hannibal aired in 2013 I wasn’t doing well creatively speaking. As a child I had dreams of becoming an artist. And after years of drawing and painting and trying to create an amazing portfolio my application for art school got denied. I stopped drawing after that. I don’t think it was a conscious choice, but I felt like my art just wasn’t good enough. Somewhere around that time I started handsewing plushies. I’ve always loved stuffed animals and it was very comforting to be able to create art in a way that wasn’t related to drawing. I remember watching Hannibal and thinking ‘I could make some of the characters as plushies’. I didn’t think much of it (and I definitely wasn’t planning on crafts becoming a long term hobby), but I tweeted them anyway. You replied. You liked them.

I think in that moment it was important for me to feel recognised. It encouraged me to keep on creating. Your creativity inspired me to create ‘the Plushmaker’ (as it originates from ‘the Piemaker’). I wouldn’t have had Gillian Anderson commission me to make plushies for you. I owe you a lot. What I saw at RDC was exactly what I felt through all these years through our occasional contact over twitter. Which is a mutual love and respect for the fans of the show.

What I truly want to say is: thank you for everything. <3 (and I hope you liked the plush version I made of you)

P.S. I promise to make some American Gods plushies when the show airs.

Gotta catch ’em all!

I’ve been getting many requests, especially during streams, to make Pokemon plushies. I always wanted to do a small plush Pokemon project so I settled with making Cosplay Pikachu’s! Those who’ve played the last two Pokemon games probably know about cosplay Pikachu; a female Pikachu’s are able to dress up in five different costumes corresponding to the five contest conditions. I won’t be able to make ALL the costumes, so I settled with three costumes: Pikachu Rock Star, Pikachu Pop Star and Pikachu Libre. I still need to make Pikachu Libre but I wanted to show these lil’ guys in advance. Tell me what you think down in the comments!

Attending Imagicon 2016

I’ll be attending Imagicon 2016 as the Plushmaker! It’s held October 15th at De Reehorst in Ede, The Netherlands. Make sure to drop by my stand and say Hi! I’m taking suggestions of which plushies you would like to see at the con! Please leave a comment or drop me an email at iris@plushmaker.com

I’ve been going to Imagicon since the first edition two years ago. It’s a small, but lovely convention in Ede, The Netherlands. It is well organized and the atmosphere is super friendly and cozy. I myself haven’t been able to attend many of the activities held at the con (as I’m in the dealer room all day!) but there’s loads of activities for you guys to enjoy besides roaming around the dealer room. The con is run by fans for fans and I’ve come to know them as a group of very driven, motivated and lovely people.

I hope to see you guys in October!

Website launch!

I’m so excited to finally share my website with every single one of you guys! In the past few weeks I’ve been working very hard to get this website up and running and I’m very happy with the final result. Special thanks to my friend Bob, who’s helped me out tremendously (and put up with my constant messaging about the site).

I always quite liked the idea of getting a custom website for my plushies. I know some of you have been asking me about it for quite some time. The only thing that really kept me from doing so, had to do with the costs of hosting a website and getting a custom site designed. However as Facebook keeps changing their algorithm and layout overtime, I felt like it was time to change mediums and get a site of my own as soon as possible.

This site is still in the try-out phase of course. I would love to get a custom designed lay-out one day, but I’ll need some time to save up for it. Feedback is definitely welcome – you can send me an email or leave a comment down below! 🙂
